McCarthy's unit was sent to a remote outpost in the Central Highlands, where they were constantly under attack from the Viet Cong. The fighting was brutal and relentless, and McCarthy soon found himself questioning everything he had ever believed about war and humanity.
As the war dragged on, McCarthy began to experience nightmares and flashbacks. He became withdrawn and irritable, and he started to drink heavily. His fellow officers noticed the changes in him, but they didn't know how to help.
Finally, after a particularly bloody battle, McCarthy snapped. He went AWOL and wandered aimlessly through the jungle for days. When he was finally found, he was malnourished and delirious. He was evacuated to a hospital in Saigon, where he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disFree Download (PTSD).
McCarthy's story is a powerful and unflinching account of the horrors of war and the devastating impact it can have on the human mind. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the true cost of war.
