Early Life
Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was the son of Stephen Armstrong, a farmer, and Viola Armstrong, a homemaker. Armstrong had two siblings, a brother named Dean and a sister named June.
Armstrong was fascinated by flying from a young age. He built model airplanes and read books about aviation. When he was six years old, he took his first airplane ride. He was hooked from that moment on.
Education and Military Service
Armstrong attended Purdue University, where he studied aeronautical engineering. He graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After college, Armstrong joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a pilot during the Korean War.
After the war, Armstrong returned to civilian life. He worked as a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA),which later became NASA. Armstrong was one of the first pilots to fly the X-15 rocket plane.
NASA Career
In 1962, Armstrong was selected by NASA to be an astronaut. He was part of the Gemini program, which was a series of missions to test the spacecraft and equipment that would be used for the Apollo moon landings.
In 1969, Armstrong was chosen to command the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. Armstrong's famous words, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," are etched in the annals of history.
Later Life
After the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong retired from NASA. He taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and served on the National Commission on Space. Armstrong also wrote a book about his experiences, titled "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong."
Neil Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82. He is remembered as one of the greatest explorers in human history. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
