About the Author
Kang Chol-hwan was born in a prison camp in North Korea in 1974. He spent the first 10 years of his life there, subjected to starvation, torture, and forced labor. In 1992, he escaped from North Korea and made his way to South Korea. He is now a human rights activist and the author of the book The Aquariums of Pyongyang.
