In this engrossing biography, author John Lahr explores the madcap, nervy, and singular life of the acclaimed actress. Drawing on extensive interviews with Stritch herself, as well as her friends, family, and colleagues, Lahr paints a vivid portrait of a woman who lived life on her own terms.
Stritch was born in Detroit in 1925. Her father was a doctor, and her mother was a socialite. Stritch's parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother in a wealthy suburb of New York City.
Stritch began her acting career in the early 1950s, appearing in small roles on Broadway and in television. She made her breakthrough in 1955, when she was cast as Golde in the original production of "Fiddler on the Roof." Stritch's performance was a tour-de-force, and she won a Tony Award for her work.
Stritch went on to star in a number of other Broadway shows, including "Company," "Follies," and "A Little Night Music." She also appeared in films and television shows, but it was on the stage that she truly shone.
Stritch was known for her fiery personality and her no-nonsense attitude. She was also a heavy smoker and drinker, and she often struggled with depression and anxiety.
Despite her personal demons, Stritch never lost her love of performing. She continued to work until the end of her life, and she died in 2014 at the age of 89.
John Lahr's biography of Elaine Stritch is a fascinating and intimate look at the life of a true Broadway legend. Lahr captures Stritch's wit, her vulnerability, and her indomitable spirit. This is a must-read for fans of Stritch and for anyone interested in the history of Broadway.
