After the war, Glenn continued his military career as a test pilot, pushing the boundaries of aviation technology. In 1957, he became one of the seven original astronauts selected for NASA's Project Mercury, a pioneering program aimed at putting a human in space.

On February 20, 1962, Glenn made history as the first American to orbit the Earth aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. His mission, codenamed "Friendship 7," lasted for nearly five hours, during which he circled the globe three times. Glenn's calm demeanor, unwavering focus, and exceptional technical skills ensured the success of his mission, capturing the hearts and minds of millions around the world.
