A Politician with a Conscience

Mikva's exceptional political career spanned three decades, beginning with his election to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1956. In 1968, he made history by becoming the first Democratic congressman elected from Chicago's North Side.

Throughout his time in Congress, Mikva distinguished himself as a tireless champion of civil rights, education, and environmental protections. He played a pivotal role in the passage of landmark legislation, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Clean Air Act of 1970.

Mikva's unwavering commitment to justice extended beyond the halls of Congress. He also served as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, advocating for progressive criminal justice reforms. His belief in rehabilitation and restorative justice shaped his approach to the criminal justice system.

A Judge of Unwavering Integrity

Following his retirement from Congress in 1983, Mikva embarked on a new chapter in his legal career. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, where he served with distinction for nine years.

As a federal judge, Mikva presided over numerous high-profile cases, including the trial of John Gotti, the infamous head of the Gambino crime family. Mikva's reputation for fairness, impartiality, and legal acumen earned him respect from both the legal community and the general public.

A Mentor and Scholar of Law

After stepping down from the bench, Mikva returned to academia, where he served as a professor at Northwestern University School of Law and the University of Chicago Law School. As a teacher, he inspired generations of law students with his brilliance, passion, and dedication to the rule of law.

Mikva's scholarly pursuits also reflected his deep understanding of the legal system. He authored and co-authored several books on topics ranging from criminal justice to the role of technology in the courts. His writings continue to inform and educate legal professionals and policy makers to this day.
