The Cyclones were founded in 1992 by a group of investors led by Bob O'Loughlin. The team was named after the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, which is manufactured in St. Louis. The Cyclones played their home games at the Kiel Center (now Enterprise Center). The arena was the smallest in the CHL, but it was known for its loud and passionate fans.

In their first season, the Cyclones finished with a record of 40-28-12. The team made it to the playoffs, but they were eliminated in the first round. The following season, the Cyclones improved their record to 48-22-10. The team won the CHL championship in 1993, defeating the Tulsa Oilers in four games. The Cyclones repeated as champions in 1995, defeating the Indianapolis Ice in four games.

The Cyclones continued to be a successful team throughout the 1990s. The team made it to the playoffs every season, and they won the CHL championship again in 1999. The Cyclones also made it to the finals in 1994 and 2004, but they lost both times to the Indianapolis Ice.

The Cyclones began to decline in the early 2000s. The team missed the playoffs in 2002 and 2003. The Cyclones were sold to a new ownership group in 2004, but the team continued to struggle. The Cyclones folded in 2005.

The Cyclones were a popular team in St. Louis. The team's games were always well-attended, and the fans were known for their passion and loyalty. The Cyclones were also a successful team on the ice, winning the CHL championship three times. The Cyclones will always be remembered as one of the most successful minor league hockey teams in St. Louis.
