Andrew was shot in the leg and the back. He was evacuated to a hospital in Germany, where he underwent multiple surgeries.

Andrew's injuries were severe, but he refused to give up. He underwent months of rehabilitation and physical therapy. He eventually made a full recovery and returned to active duty.

In 2013, Andrew was awarded the Purple Heart for his heroism in Afghanistan. He is the first Samoan-American to receive the Purple Heart.
