Andrew was born in Samoa in 1988. He came to the United States with his family when he was a young boy. He grew up in California and attended the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating from college, Andrew joined the U.S. Army.
In 2011, Andrew was deployed to Afghanistan. He was serving as a combat medic with the 101st Airborne Division. On June 21, 2011, Andrew was on a patrol when his unit was ambushed by the Taliban. Andrew was shot in the leg and the back. He was evacuated to a hospital in Germany, where he underwent multiple surgeries.
Andrew's injuries were severe, but he refused to give up. He underwent months of rehabilitation and physical therapy. He eventually made a full recovery and returned to active duty.
In 2013, Andrew was awarded the Purple Heart for his heroism in Afghanistan. He is the first Samoan-American to receive the Purple Heart.
