Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet were two French explorers who traveled down the Mississippi River in the 17th century. Their journey was a major milestone in the exploration of North America.
Early lives
Jacques Marquette was born in France in 1637. He joined the Jesuit Free Download in 1655 and was sent to New France as a missionary in 1666. Louis Jolliet was born in Canada in 1645. He was a fur trader and explorer who had already traveled extensively in the Great Lakes region.
The Mississippi River expedition
In 1673, Marquette and Jolliet set out from Sault Ste. Marie on Lake Superior with the goal of finding the Mississippi River. They traveled by canoe down the Fox River and into the Wisconsin River. They reached the Mississippi River in June of 1673 and traveled south for several weeks.
Marquette and Jolliet were the first Europeans to travel down the Mississippi River. They recorded their observations of the river and the land along its banks. They also made contact with several Native American tribes.
Return to New France
Marquette and Jolliet returned to New France in the fall of 1673. They reported their findings to the governor of New France, Louis de Frontenac. Frontenac was impressed with their report and sent them back to the Mississippi River the following year to explore further.
Marquette and Jolliet traveled down the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Arkansas River. They then turned around and returned to New France. Their second journey provided them with more information about the Mississippi River and the land along its banks.
Later lives
Marquette died in 1675 while returning from a mission to the Illinois Indians. Jolliet continued to explore the Great Lakes region and the Mississippi River. He died in 1700.
Legacy
Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet were two of the most important explorers of North America. Their journey down the Mississippi River was a major milestone in the exploration of the continent. Their discoveries helped to open up the Mississippi River to trade and settlement.
Marquette and Jolliet are remembered today as two of the most important figures in the history of North American exploration.
