Henry VIII was born on June 28, 1491, at Greenwich Palace. He was the third of four children born to King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Henry's older brother, Arthur, was the heir to the throne, but he died in 1502, leaving Henry as the new heir.

The Reign of Henry VIII

Henry VIII ascended to the throne in 1509 at the age of 17. He quickly established himself as a strong and capable ruler. Henry was a skilled jouster and a patron of the arts. He also led England to victory in several wars against France and Scotland.

The Six Wives

Henry VIII is perhaps best known for his six wives. He married Catherine of Aragon in 1509, but he later divorced her when she failed to produce a male heir. Henry's fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, was divorced in 1540. Henry's fifth wife, Catherine Howard, was executed in 1542 for adultery. Henry's sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr, survived him.

The Reformation

Henry VIII's reign was also marked by the Reformation. Henry broke away from the Catholic Church in 1534 and established the Church of England. Henry's religious reforms had a profound impact on England, and they helped to shape the country's religious landscape for centuries to come.

The Legacy of Henry VIII
