On July 25, 1956, one of the most infamous maritime disasters in history occurred when the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish passenger ship Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The collision resulted in the sinking of the Andrea Doria and the deaths of 51 people. It was the first major maritime disaster to occur after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and shocked the world.

The Andrea Doria

The Andrea Doria was an Italian luxury liner that was built in Genoa, Italy, in 1951. She was the largest and most luxurious passenger ship in the world at the time of her launch. The Andrea Doria was designed to be a floating palace, with elegant cabins, spacious public rooms, and a swimming pool. She was also the first passenger ship to be equipped with radar.

The Stockholm

The Stockholm was a Swedish passenger ship that was built in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1948. She was a smaller but still luxurious ship than the Andrea Doria. The Stockholm was designed to be a comfortable and reliable ship, with a reputation for being well-maintained.

The Collision

On the evening of July 25, 1956, the Andrea Doria was sailing from New York City to Genoa, Italy, with 1,134 passengers and crew on board. The Stockholm was sailing from New York City to Stockholm, Sweden, with 534 passengers and crew on board.

At around 11:00 p.m., the two ships collided off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The collision occurred in thick fog, and the ships were both traveling at high speeds. The Andrea Doria was struck on her starboard side by the Stockholm's bow. The impact tore a large hole in the Andrea Doria's hull, and the ship began to take on water rapidly.

The Andrea Doria's crew evacuated the passengers and crew into lifeboats and rafts. The Stockholm's crew also assisted in the rescue effort. However, the Andrea Doria sank within 11 hours of the collision.

The Aftermath

The sinking of the Andrea Doria was a major maritime disaster. Fifty-one people were killed in the collision and the sinking. The Andrea Doria was a total loss, and the Stockholm was severely damaged.

The disaster had a major impact on the maritime industry. It led to changes in ship design and navigation, and it also led to the development of new safety regulations.

The Legacy

The sinking of the Andrea Doria is still remembered as one of the most infamous maritime disasters in history. The Andrea Doria is often compared to the Titanic, and the two disasters are often seen as symbols of the dangers of maritime travel.

The Andrea Doria is still a popular subject of books, articles, and documentaries. The ship's wreck is also a popular diving destination.

The collision of the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm was a major maritime disaster that shocked the world. The disaster had a major impact on the maritime industry, and it is still remembered as one of the most infamous maritime disasters in history.
