Moss, born into a sharecropping family in rural Alabama, grew up amidst the challenges and hardships that permeated the Jim Crow era. Despite the systemic barriers he faced, his unyielding determination fueled his aspirations to make a difference in the world.

The Call to Serve

With the outbreak of World War II, Moss answered the call to duty, enlisting in the United States Army. As an African American soldier, he served with distinction, fighting valiantly in the European Theater. His bravery and unwavering determination earned him the Bronze Star Medal.

After the war, Moss returned home to Alabama, eager to make a positive impact on his community. However, he found that the racial prejudice he had fought against on the battlefields continued to plague society back home.

Entering the Political Arena

Undeterred, Moss turned his unwavering resolve towards politics. He recognized that true change required systemic shifts, and he believed that the political arena provided a platform to advocate for marginalized communities and work towards a more just and equitable society.

In 1967, Moss was elected to the Alabama State Legislature, becoming one of the first African American legislators in the state since Reconstruction. Within the legislature, he fought tirelessly for civil rights, economic justice, and educational opportunities for all.

The Road to the White House

Moss's reputation as a dedicated and principled leader transcended state lines. In 1981, President Jimmy Carter appointed him as a Special Assistant to the President for Congressional Relations. In this role, he played a pivotal part in the development and passage of several landmark legislative initiatives.

Moss's unwavering commitment to service and his ability to bridge divides made him a respected figure in the political landscape. His journey culminated in 1984 when he became the first African American to serve as Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison. In this capacity, he managed the relationship between the White House and the nation's governors, mayors, and other local leaders.

A Legacy of Service

Moss's legacy extends far beyond his time in the White House. He has served on numerous boards and commissions, continuing to advocate for social justice and equality. His unwavering spirit and unwavering commitment to service have inspired countless others to make a difference in their communities and the world.
