Huebert argues that the Arctic is entering a new era of geopolitical competition. As the ice melts, new shipping routes are opening up, and this is giving countries like Russia and China the opportunity to expand their influence in the region. At the same time, the Arctic is also home to vast reserves of oil and gas, and this is making it a target for resource extraction. This competition for resources is likely to lead to conflict in the years to come.
However, Huebert also argues that the Arctic is a region of great potential for cooperation. The Arctic Council, an international forum for cooperation between Arctic nations, is working to promote sustainable development and protect the environment. And as the Arctic becomes more accessible, it is also becoming a place for people from all over the world to come together and learn from each other.
Life, Death, and Geopolitics in the New Arctic is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of the Arctic region. It is a timely and important book that provides a deep understanding of the complex geopolitical challenges facing the region.
